Storied Jazz Pianist and Composer celebrates the 50th Anniversary of The Stonewall Riots in NYC

Presented in collaboration with Saratoga Performing Arts CenterVIDEOA select member of jazz’s piano pantheon, Fred Hersch is a pervasively influential creative force who has shaped the music’s course over more than three decades as an improviser, composer, educator, bandleader, collaborator and recording artist. He has been proclaimed “the most arrestingly innovative pianist in jazz over the last decade” by Vanity Fair, “an elegant force of musical invention” by The L.A. Times, and “a living legend” byThe New Yorker.Tonight's performance will kick off Saratoga Performing Arts Center's Jazz Fest and pay homage to The Stonewall Riots, which occurred on June 28, 1969, and are considered the most important event leading to the gay liberation movement and the modern fight for LGBTQIA+ rights in United States. Fred Hersch, the first openly gay, HIV-positive jazz player, will perform original works in addition to pieces by famed pianists, while also providing commentary on how the Stonewall Riots shaped him, his jazz career and his growth as a musician, drawing from his memoir Good Things Happen Slowly.
